One Killed in Multiple Truck Crash at Otedola Bridge

At least one driver has been confirmed dead following a multiple-vehicle crash involving articulated trucks in the early hours of Friday at Otedola Bridge, inward Secretariat, along the Lagos–Ibadan Motorway.

The accident involved two heavy-duty trailers—one laden with sand and the other with granite—which reportedly collided after a dispute over right of way. The driver of the sand-laden trailer was trapped in the wreckage and sustained fatal injuries.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) rescue team extricated the victim and handed him over to officials of the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), who transported him to the General Hospital, Ikeja, where he was pronounced dead. His identity has yet to be confirmed.

The driver of the granite-laden trailer was rescued without injuries.

About 50 metres from the main crash site, a third trailer conveying flour overturned, compounding traffic congestion in the area. No casualties were reported in the secondary incident.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, described the fatal crash as “deeply regrettable and largely preventable,” attributing it to impatience, indiscipline and failure to yield right of way among drivers. He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.

Emergency responders and security personnel from LASTMA, LASAMBUS and the Lagos State Police Command were deployed to secure the scene, evacuate victims and restore order.

The crash led to severe traffic disruption, with about 80 per cent of the carriageway blocked, forcing authorities to divert vehicles heading into Lagos.

Otedola Bridge has a history of serious accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles. Past incidents include a multi-vehicle crash in December 2025 that claimed the lives of a family of three, as well as other fatal collisions linked to speeding and mechanical failures.

The Lagos State Government reiterated its commitment to improving road safety and urged motorists, especially truck drivers, to comply strictly with traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.
