JUST IN: Five lawmakers dump LP, YPP for ADC

Five members of the House of Representatives of Nigeria have left their former political parties to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Benjamin Kalu, the deputy speaker announced the defections during Thursday’s plenary after reading the letters submitted by the affected lawmakers.

Those who moved to the ADC include Victor Afam, Peter Anekwe and Lilian Obiageli, who all represent federal constituencies in Anambra State and resigned their membership of the Labour Party.

Also joining the party is Peter Uzokwe, who represents Nnewi North/Nnewi South/Ekwusigo federal constituency and left the Young Progressives Party.

Omoruyi Osaro, representing Egor/Ikpoba-Okha Federal Constituency in Edo State, also defected from the Labour Party to the ADC.

The lawmakers attributed their decisions to unresolved internal disputes and leadership challenges within their former parties.

In a related development, several other members of the lower chamber also switched allegiance from the Peoples Democratic Party and the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress, further weakening the opposition ranks in the House.
